Heads Will Roll if Things Aren't Right
After graduating from BYU with a BA in Communications, Kevin worked 3 part-time jobs, while maintaining his full-time position at Salt Lake-based Politis Communications, a tech-focused PR firm. At 3 in the morning, he delivered produce part-time.
Alone on the street, he routinely ran into a venders for a pick-up, leaving his diesel running outside. One morning, after emerging with a head of cabbage in each hand, he saw his truck driving away. He instinctively dropped the produce on the pavement and took off after the grinding truck, as the cabbage heads rolled into the street after him. Saying a prayer of thanks for my high school track coach, he caught up to the truck, hopped up on the passenger side step and started banging on the window, yelling, “PULL OVER!” After half a city block, the man inside slammed on the brakes and timidly unlocked the passenger door. Kevin leapt into the cab, while the unwelcome guest tried to exit, and in a not-so-polite-don’t-ruin-my-day tone, said-- “GET OUT OF MY TRUCK!” When asked what he would have done had the man pulled a gun, or kept driving, Kevin firmly replied, “I’d have dodged the bullet, broken the window and thrown him to the street.” Crazy, or confident? This attitude has carried Kevin through a successful 14-year career as a marketing and business consultant, who started his own practice at age 27. The lessons learned below, from the wee hours of the morning as a produce driver will continue with his involvement at Renew Financial: 1— Heads will roll if things aren’t right. 2— Sometimes, you have to keep yelling and banging until you’re back in the driver’s seat and calmly in control. 3— Be prepared to dodge bullets and hang on for the ride of your life. Kevin entered the world of finance in 2002 and was co-owner of a new company who pioneered debt elimination through proprietary, non-loan consolidation methodologies. It was here that he also began working with people to elevate their credit scores. Through his collective partner efforts, they eliminated more than 216,000 inaccurate, negative marks from client credit reports. Kevin has been the driving force behind several other start-up companies including Jumbo Bright Prompters, who launched in 2008 before the recession. The tech company focused on live events… the first industry to take a hit. Against economic odds, he helped lift production as they doubled revenues each of the next three years. He was also instrumental in the creation of HalfMoon Farms, an organic greenhouse farm in Utah, where he developed their business plan and implementation strategies, as well as identifying first round funding. Their second round was through institutional funding and recently closed, paving the way to build their first 4 fully-sustainable greenhouses. Kevin continues to work on a consulting basis with these companies. When he's not at home enjoying time with his wife and 5 kids, or involved with Scouts as a Cubmaster and Eagle Mentor, you can find him running the mountain trails near his Utah home with a 20 lb weight vest strapped to his chest... training for his next Spartan Race.
